4. | Analysis of Tourism-Oriented Spatial Networks Based on Google Maps Data: The Case of Edirne City Center Mete Korhan Özkök doi: 10.5505/gpts.2024.97269 Pages 79 - 91 Nowadays, it can be said that studies on the intersection of "big data-network analysis" in the field of tourism have intensified, and the usage of Google and other social media platforms as the main big data sources has increased. This intersection study topic is important for determining tourist attraction centers and tourist routes, optimizing selection-decision systems, monitoring satisfaction and behavior, and thus determining tourist actions and usage patterns. In this regard, the main aim of the study is to analyze the spatial network structure created by the tourist attractions in Edirne city center and to evaluate it using the network analysis method. In this context, the locations defined in the “Things To-Do” category for Edirne city center on the Google Maps platform were considered. Depending on the content of the Google Search Engine Results Page (SERP), the rating level of the locations and the “People Also Searching For (PASF)” information, which is an important content in the field of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) today, were collected. PASF information reveals other places that users are searching for depending on a location, and as a result, a tourism search network is formed. Network analysis was applied, and evaluations were made considering the spatial dimensions of the locations. As a result, tourism places with high centrality value for Edirne city center, thematic neighborhood groups were identified, and route suggestions were presented. It is expected that the study will contribute to literature in terms of method and evaluation perspective. |
5. | Destination-Country Image of Foreign Tourists Visiting Türkiye Ali Rýza Mancý doi: 10.5505/gpts.2024.77486 Pages 92 - 106 Image is one of the most important determinants for tourists to choose a place to visit. The concept of country image encompasses the general perceptions and opinions about a particular country-destination. The importance of image in promoting and positioning country-destinations in the market, attracting tourists and influencing their future behavioral intentions is not surprising. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the dimensions of country image and their impact on visitors' future behavior. For this purpose, a quantitative analysis through a structural equation model (SEM) was developed. An online survey of 374 foreign tourists visiting Turkey was conducted. The data were analyzed using the Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) method. Accordingly, it was determined that cognitive image plays an important role in shaping the emotional image of a destination. It was also confirmed that cognitive and affective image are effective on overall country image and revisit intention. Cognitive image was found to have a great influence on factors such as infrastructure and facilities, cultural attractions and natural attractions. These results emphasize the importance of cognitive and emotional image in the evaluation of tourism destinations. Managerial and theoretical implications are derived from the findings. As a result, it is expected that determining visitors' country-destination perceptions will serve to eliminate possible negative images. |
6. | A Research to Determine the Environmental Literacy Levels of Tourism Students Reyhan Arslan Ayazlar, Gökay Akbulut doi: 10.5505/gpts.2024.08769 Pages 107 - 121 The future of the tourism sector is highly dependent on the conservation and development of natural resources used as tourist attractions. Environmental issues prevalent today and the societal responses from citizens and non-governmental organizations have made the tourism sector more environmentally conscious. Increasing the sector's environmental awareness and adopting sustainable principles, as well as reducing the negative impacts of tourist activities, are crucial. The role of tourism education institutions in imparting knowledge to tourism professionals and workers is vital in achieving these goals. In this context, the research aims to determine the level of environmental literacy among undergraduate students in the tourism field. The survey technique was utilized as the data collection method, and data were obtained from 206 tourism undergraduate students. According to the research findings, it can be said that tourism students generally have a moderate level of environmental literacy. Among the sub-dimensions of environmental literacy, students have a high level of awareness in environmental attitudes, while having a moderate level of awareness in environmental knowledge, environmental behavior, and environmental perception. Based on the findings, policies can be developed to increase environmental awareness among tourism businesses and employees. This would support the development of the region in terms of tourism with less impact, adhering to the principles of sustainable tourism. |
7. | The Importance of Art and Spatial Narrative in European Gothic Painting Towards the Renaissance Hatice Çorbacý doi: 10.5505/gpts.2024.54254 Pages 122 - 140 Gothic Painting Art developed from the Medieval Painting Art, which was dominated by the Byzantine style. Glass painting has been known since the Romanic Period. Following the development of Gothic architecture, a new style emerged from the stylistic changes of the Gothic and Neo-Byzantine styles in painting. The greatest master of this new style is Giotto, though Cimabue and Duccio experimented with it before him. All three artists painted the painting "Mary Sitting on the Throne and the Child Jesus". Giotto is the true creator of modern painting. Giotto paved the way for the Renaissance. His works are completely different from those of Cimabue or Duccio. The spatial arrangement seen in Giotto's works is considered the first great revolution in art. Examples of "perspective" and three-dimensional application emerged that preceded the centuries-old Renaissance theories. Giotto gave such a three-dimensional reality to his forms that; they have the same effect as bulky, free-standing plastics. His forms are not suspended in the air but have mass and the volume of their bodies. Art after Giotto progresses with a naturalistic understanding and as observations of nature expand, artistic life becomes richer. The artists who followed Giotto gradually applied artistic innovations from all parts of Europe. This style is called International Gothic. In 1420, in the Netherlands, there were works that took realism forward in Gothic painting. Since painting, architecture, and sculpture went hand in hand during this period, it is called Early Renaissance in Italy and Late Gothic in Northern Europe. |
8. | Hesitism Faced by Travel Agencies on Tax Issues: A Research in the Light of Tax Rulings Barýþ Çam, Ýsmail Kýzýlýrmak doi: 10.5505/gpts.2024.32932 Pages 141 - 148 Tax is important for many sectors today, as it is for the tourism sector. Travel agencies in the tourism sector are subject to tax due to the services they provide. At this point, travel agencies experience hesitations regarding tax issues, both in terms of legislation and implementation. For this reason, travel agencies request tax rulings from the Revenue Administration to eliminate their hesitations regarding tax issues. Tax ruling is a request for information from the Revenue Administration to clarify the issue of hesitation regarding tax issues. Tax rulings are located in the tax ruling information system“https: //www.gib.gov.tr/ozelge-sistemi/genel-bilgi”. In this sense, in order to reach tax rulings related to travel agencies, the tax ruling search system was used to scan tax rulings. In the research, 13 tax rulings related issues that travel agencies have hesitations about regarding tax issues were examined. The legal language in tax rulings was simplified, summarized, and turned into a question- and-answer format. Tax rulings were tried to simplify the legal language so that travel agencies can understand and apply tax issues more efficiently. It is of great importance for the continuity and profitability of the businesses that travel agencies have full information about tax issues and that there is no lack of information about tax practices. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the hesitations experienced by travel agencies about tax issues and to contribute to travel agencies that have the same hesitations about tax issues. |
9. | Do Airports in Rural Areas in Turkey Support Rural Tourism? Or does it Threaten Rural Tourism? Gönül Akýn doi: 10.5505/gpts.2024.68552 Pages 149 - 168 In recent years, the tendency towards rural tourism has increased with the desire to be away from crowds and the noise, in favor of a peaceful vacation in close contact with nature. The purpose of this research is to determine whether airports established in rural areas promote or threaten rural tourism. According to OECD, the rural tourism potential and current situation of air transportation in 34 cities, which are considered rural areas in Türkiye, were investigated. Within the scope of the study, 16 cities in Turkey classified as rural areas and equipped with airports were selected, with Kars in the east and Muðla in the west; and 18 cities without airports were chosen, including Ardahan in the east and Kýrklareli in the west. One-on-one interviews were conducted with domestic tourists who visited these four cities, which are important in terms of rural tourism, for rural tourism purposes. The qualitative research method was determined for the study, and the data obtained from the participants were subjected to content analysis, through which main themes, sub-themes, and codes were created. According to the findings of the research, domestic tourists state that rural tourism is not sufficiently developed in rural areas where there is no airport, and thanks to an airport to be built, rural areas can attract more tourists and develop economically. On the other hand, while airports provide advantages in transportation in the cities where they are located, factors such as destruction of agricultural lands and forests, urbanization, environmental and noise pollution are perceived as a threat to rural tourism. At the end of the research, recommendations were made for the sector. |
